San Francisco punks Spiritual Cramp have their long-awaited self-titled debut LP on the way, and today they share new single ‘Herberts On Holiday’ – a touching ode to Michael Bingham’s wife, who saved the vocalist from following a different path, and comes with a homemade video featuring the two on a weekend away.
He notes: “I don’t really like the idea of trying to sell the fact that I had a rough experience growing up to a musical audience for credibility but this song is probably the closest I’ll ever get to talking about what life was like. It wasn’t good.
I feel really lucky to have met Barb. It’s hard to quickly summarise in a clip the impact she has had on my life but I can say with all honesty everything I have in my life today is because of her. To this day I am constantly making mistakes and oftentimes not living up to my fullest potential. But through the 18 years of knowing her, she’s never rubbed my face in it. All she’s ever done is cheer me on – even if I don’t feel like I deserve it.
She always told me she wanted me to write her a song. I always tried but it always came out as some sarcastic thing because I have a hard time being open. I use humor to mask the way that I really feel. When I wrote this song I was on a plane home from our tour with V**gra Boys – I was crying uncontrollably and I knew while I was writing it that it wasn’t guarded. Hope you enjoy.”
Out November 3rd via Blue Grape Music, debut album Spiritual Cramp was produced by Michael Bingham and Michael Fenton of the band and includes additional production from Carlos de la Garza (Paramore, M83, The Linda Linda’s, Cherry Glazerr, etc.), who also mixed the album.
The band brings fast downstrokes and upstrokes with hip-hop production and reggae inspirations to a Taking Heads meets Big Audio Dynamite meets Clash-styled punk, finding a balance between Molotov protest songs and genuine personal struggle. Both are a product of Bingham and Fenton coming up in San Francisco’s Bay Area. Praised for being a band in their own lane, their well-documented live shows and a handful of EPs have garnered the band a consistent buzz and support from the likes of Iggy Pop, V*gra Boys, Turnstile, Gel, Deavheaven, Turnover, Militarie Gun and many more..
This December, the band will tour in the UK and Ireland with Militarie Gun, after supporting Teenage Wrist in the US. Tickets available HERE.
