Boy Swallows Universe is a new Australian series starring Travis Fimmel, Simon Baker, and Phoebe Tonkin. It is based on the acclaimed novel written by Trent Dalton.

“Boy Swallows Universe” aims to be unique above all else, putting a twist on classic series about a perfect child who finds their place in the world through the love of their family and the wise advice of their predecessors: paying taxes and adhering to social rules.

In “Boy Swallows Universe”, everything, absolutely everything, is different: their mother is addicted, their adoptive father sells, their brother cannot speak, and their babysitter is a friendly guy who has spent 25 years in prison for killing a taxi driver. In the midst of it all, there’s the mystery surrounding their father’s kidnapping still waiting to be solved.

It’s the life of Eli Bell, a boy who has to survive all of this and, at the same time, become a good man.

About the series

“Boy Swallows Universe” is, above all, the other side of the mirror of classic shows, but the producers have put effort into it and offer us an ironic and almost magical series, which, with excellent production, manages to portray a whole generation, present irony itself, entertain with a thrilling story, introduce well-defined interesting characters, propose plots and subplots, deliver good performances, and, on top of all this, bring joy.

It’s what happens when you have a script based on a good novel, written by Trent Dalton.

“Boy Swallows Universe” has everything it needs to be a new success for the streaming platform. Above all, it has a captivating story to tell, which is also told in a way that the general public enjoys, with sentiment and passion, with a noteworthy child protagonist who has personality and a lot to say.

Technically, without being extraordinary, it’s a good Australian series that knows how to take its time in each sequence, savoring them slowly but telling a piece of the story in each one, without any of them being trivial or passing without adding information: there’s a lot of history to summarize in this series, many characters, and many plots that are harmoniously woven together as this boy’s life unfolds.

Our Opinion

“Boy Swallows Universe” is not a drama, but it has drama. It is charming without being melancholic and it is so intelligently constructed that, if you are interested in any of its characters, it will hook you.

A story that skillfully blends heart with a compelling narrative, consistently opting to approach things with irony, intelligence, and a great sense of humor.
