Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in Fubar, a new Netflix series created by Nick Santora.
As the song says, time goes by. It’s inevitable and remembering past moments with James Cameron isn’t bad at all. On that occasion, it was with the great Jamie Lee Curtis, and now it is with the also great Monica Barbaro.
That movie, True Lies, was highly entertaining and spectacular. Fubar is not as entertaining, it has a different format, Mr. Pumpkin is a bit older, and times have changed, as the series insists on reminding us, in an amusing, if not brilliant, generational renewal.
But we like this gentleman and the series is, at least, enjoyable within its pretensions.
About the series
Fubar is not spectacular for a spy series: the action scenes do not have a fast pace, nor, except for its good beginning, it behaves like one of those series that will take your breath away. It is closer to a TV movie in terms of pace and our character, who admits to not having the agility of yesteryear in a Iโm-too-old-for-this-sh#t Roger Murtaugh style, takes the series with a kind of comic calm that is pleasant, not heart rushing.
It is a good spy series, good ( and nothing more), which is based on self-references of the protagonist’s career (it couldnโt be otherwise) and that, above all, wants to be enjoyable for everyone, to reconcile the fans of the movies of the 80s and 90s and, adapted to the current times, to show a tone of ambiguity that coexists with the spirit of that cinema.
Does it succeed? More or less, It tries to satisfy everyone, but it won’t leave either one or the other happy, performing as revival that could have been better for some and a somewhat unnecessary for others. It doesn’t try to bring anything new to the scene, and it accomplishes its main objectives by far, with a Schwarzenegger who fits the role and who, a little despite his not so agile movements, manages to convince us portraying a character he knows well, created by himself and that has evolved over the years along with him.
Our opinion
Entertaining and enjoyable, family-friendly, on the ground of the already hackneyed in a nostalgic version of True Lies.
