Dog Gone is a movie directed by Stephen Herek starring Rob Lowe and Kimberly Williams-Paisley. It is based on a book by Pauls Toutonghi.

A tv style saccharine movie with all the sickly sweet elements to delight the more family oriented viewers and create one or more ulcers for reviewers: full of clichés, easy, schematic and totally formulaic.

Storyline

A guy whose girlfriend has just dumped, gets a new friend, Gonker, with which, I guarantee, he manages a longer and more sincere relationship. The problem happens when he loses his dear friend and the guy will do everything he can to reunite with his friend… aided by his father, who has just arrived on his graduation day.

Dog Gone (2023)

Well, we have Rob Lowe who, obviously, has had better days in his career doing this family movie about dogs which, without  going very much beyond the evident, neither offends nor wants to push beyond any pre-established patterns and, although nobody would be surprised, was not pre-selected in Sundance, nor went to Cannes and nobody thought of sending it to Venice.

A simple, family movie that is amusing and tender which benefits from the “formula”: those movies that have been tried and tested in marketing before being screened, have been seen a thousand times and no matter how many times that same formula still works in accounting in a modest way with an investment that is equally modest.

We all know what to expect, how and in what way. Don´t be surprised if the movie always follows the beaten track… They are like Christmas, there, they have to pass, they don´t appear to be liked by anyone, but remain in place secretly, harrassing our less erotic critical dreams and existing because, deep down, they need to exist.

The dog, a charming cinnamon labrador… led by a teen (sometimes they use a child), next to an understanding father.

If you want, watch it but don´t expect anything at all and get into a “flat brain scan” mode and let yourself be led by irrelevancy, simplicity, tried and true… but also charming parts of a movie about pets, yet another one, that makes us smile because deep down, we love these animals that make simplicity the true gem of their company.

Enjoy it with the company of your best friend (a dog, of course).

Although it is “more of the same” always (also) it is pleasant.

Our opinion

As a movie… we don´t see the mikes on anyone nor does anyone drop a camera… the dog iis cute and everything is up to standard in what is expected from a movie that really didn´t expect to be nothing more than what it is.
