‘Black Butterflies’ – Netflix Thriller Series

Black Butterflies (Les papillons noirs) is a 2021 French thriller noir series streaming on Netflix. It is directed by Olivier Abbou, and stars Nicolas Duvauchelle and Niels Arestrup.

Premise

Adrien Winckler is a novelist who is low on inspiration for his second book, until he gets a call from a dying man who wants him to write his memoir. This will lead Adrien down the bloodstained past of his subject.

About the Series

Alternating between the present and the decades past (late 60’s and 70’s), this six part series tells various stories. We follow several characters, not only the novelist, and his new client for whom he will write the dark memoirs, but also a policewoman.

The screenplay is good and engaging, and will probably convince fans of thrillers and murder mysteries.

Filmed in retro colors to take us to the past, and an acceptable photography for the contemporary scenes, it sets the ambiance well.

We leave the first episode in ‘Black Butterflies’ wondering if this will turn out to be a French Bonnie and Clyde, and also pondering how it will affect the novelist who has to recount the misdeeds of the two love birds back in 70’s. Evidently, there is a puzzle to be solved.
