It could have been another murder story, reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s style, set on a ship, one of those movies where a detective eats a lot while solving a crime. But no, because “In Love and Deep Water” plays with that premise and turns it around to immerse us in a delightful tale of love, crime, and comedy.

A sophisticated comedy coming all the way from Japan, available on Netflix this Thursday.

It’s a mystery comedy where the crime is clear and all we have to solve is… the enigma of love.

Review of “In Love and Deep Water”

Since we were kids, we have grown up with fantastic stories of cruises where two people find love or maybe rediscover it. Whether it was or wasn’t advertising from cruise companies (let’s admit it, it might have been), something has stayed in the collective unconscious of every person who had a television in their childhood.

“In Love and Deep Water” plays with this archetype, but it doesn’t limit itself to being just another silly romantic comedy: it presents stylish, personality-filled characters, and ensemble situations that will provide us with an entertaining time amidst the chaos. It’s one of those “elegant” or “sophisticated” comedies, whichever you prefer, with a touch of social critique and a couple of quite harsh anecdotes that, combined with the overall gentle tone of the film, give it an air of originality.

It’s not the comedy that will be remembered for its hilarious moments, nor does it aim to make us laugh uncontrollably or leave us perplexed as a comedy often does. It manages to create an ambiance with a slow-paced tone and a well-crafted ensemble screenplay, one that feels natural, tender, and yes, everything driven by sentimentality.

Good cinematography and staging in a movie that, while not outstanding, presents an elegant and balanced cinematic narrative, with a leisurely pace.

Our Opinion

It may not be the movie that will be remembered for the rest of your lives, but it is a good opportunity to be carried away by familiar tropes and reconnect with some forgotten feelings.
