Our online film festival has been paused for the past two weeks in order to make space for more urgent voices. This Friday, June 19, we will resume the program with a special single-screen presentation of Isaac Julien’s Lessons of the Hour in observance of Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The film explores the incomparable achievements of Frederick Douglass, America’s foremost abolitionist figure, and is informed by some of Douglass’s most important speeches, such as “Lessons of the Hour,” “What to the Slave Is the 4th of July?,” and “Lecture on Pictures,” the latter being a text that connects picture-making and photography to his vision of how technology could influence human relations.
