Sitting in Bars with Cake’ is a drama friendship-flick directed by Trish Sie, and starring Yara Shahidi, Odessa A’zion, Martha Kelly, with Ron Livingston and Bette Midler. The story is based on the homonymous cookbook by Audrey Shulman.

“Sitting in Bars with Cake” is one of those movies that we’ve seen a thousand times about friendship. . and illness. It’s a classic drama that works perfectly, as long as you enjoy this type of film.

It’s perfect within its genre, with a meticulously crafted script and just the right ingredients to make this (very) dramatic cake pleasing to genre lovers.

Review of “Sitting in Bars with Cake”

Sitting in Bars with Cake
Sitting in Bars with Cake

First and foremost, “Sitting in Bars with Cake” is a movie about friendship: two great friends who have to face a terrible event together, as one of them is diagnosed with a serious illness (cancer) and they have to deal with it while hoping their friendship prevails.

It has a modern touch, just enough to make it feel classic from its opening credits, with a 1950s vibe.

The best part is the two main actresses, who have roles that allow them to shine on screen. Yara Shahidi portrays a law student and pastry chef, while Odessa A’zion plays an agent and a patient. Each brings their own ingredient to a script that knows exactly how to hit the right notes and doesn’t want to break our hearts with the illness, but rather emphasize what it truly is: a beautiful film about the friendship between two young individuals.

Certainly, the main premise shapes the entire narrative, but it tries to escape some clichés of this type of movie, so even though it falls into them, it doesn’t overly emphasize the dramatic aspect.

It’s more of a coming-of-age film and a story of youth than a drama solely focused on illness.

However, the illness undeniably conditions the entire movie.

There was no other way, it was the only option.

Our Opinion

“Sitting in Bars with Cake” is a beautiful film that you have to be in the mood to watch, take your time, and savor it as much as possible, enjoying the wonderful gift of life that is friendship.

No matter how long it lasts.
