Pipa is an Argentinian thriller movie directed by Alejandro Montiel, starring Luisana Lopilato.

An interesting thriller for this Wednesday that, probably, will not disappoint.

Synopsis

Manuela Pipa lives isolated from the world, escaping her stormy past as a tough cop. But the past always comes back, and she can’t stay isolated forever.

Review

Pipa is an Argentinian thriller that is the third installment of the trilogy ‘Los crímenes del sur’, following ‘Perdida’ (2018) and ‘La Corazonada’ (2020). It leaves behind the urban police thriller, yet maintains the thriller touch, this time around it takes us to the Southern landscape of La Quebrada. It is a good movie that takes a 180 degree turn in its plot, and the handling of the narrative structure, and its rhythm. It is well adapted to the new style of Westerns being opaque and dark, and it has a hint of ‘A Touch of Evil’ (Orson Welles).

The film stands out, particularly, in the production, and in the care given to the filming, from the frames to the actual delivery of the lines in the script, which are short, but well performed and polished enough to tell a story, while avoiding juggling acts that are outside the thriller genre terrain.

It is concise because it has no other option, given the thematic complexity of the novel. Which covers a myriad of topics (as good novel should), taking us on a journey through a diversity of subjects, such as politics, corruption, romances, and a variety of characters that are intertwined in the plot. This movie is well directed, and all in all well produced.

Our Opinion

It is a good thriller that does not pretend to be more than that. It does not defy conventionalities, nor the immense influence Hollywood has in film-making.

It dares to take on complex subjects matters, carried our with a good productions, and a highly professional undertaking, undoubtedly.
