Tabu, whose real name is Tabassum Hashmi, is a renowned Indian film actress. While she has worked in Hindi films primarily, she has also made appearances in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Bengali movies, as well as one American film. Her exceptional talent has earned her the prestigious National Film Award for Best Actress twice, and she holds the record for winning the Filmfare’s Critics Award for Best Female Performer a remarkable four times.

Tabu is widely recognized for her remarkable performances in artistic and low-budget films, which often receive greater critical acclaim than commercial success. Although she has had limited roles in commercially successful movies like Border (1997), Saajan Chale Sasural (1996), Biwi No. , and Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United (1999), her most notable performances have come in films like Maachis (1996), Virasat (1997), Hu Tu Tu (1999), Astitva (2000), Chandni Bar (2001), Maqbool (2003), and Cheeni Kum (2007). She also received tremendous praise for her leading role in Mira Nair’s American film, The Namesake.

Recognized as one of the most talented actresses of her generation in India, Tabu is highly selective when it comes to choosing her film roles. In her own words, “I do films which move me, and most importantly, the unit and the director should appeal to me. Her remarkable contributions to the film industry were acknowledged when she received the Padma Shri in 2011, India’s fourth-highest civilian award.
