Captains of the World is a docuseries directed by Ben Turner and Gabe Turner.

If you don’t like soccer (or football, as you wish), perhaps it’s hard to understand or it may seem irrational: the passion, the intensity, and the absurdity of a ball going into a goal…or not.

It’s irrational, it’s football, and there’s no other sport where the fans are so devoted.

The 2022 Qatar World Cup seen from the perspective of the team’s leaders: Messi, Kane, or even Mbappé will share their viewpoints during the championship celebration.

The 2022 World Cup marked the end of an era for one man too, Lionel Messi, who was approaching retirement. The greatest football player of recent years wanted to climb another step and join the likes of his fellow countryman Maradona, reaching the pinnacle that you can only reach by winning a FIFA championship, the event’s organizer.

About the documentary

“Captains of the World” is an excellent documentary that, one year after the event, serves to remind us of all the inexplicable epicness that football carries and the madness this sport generates.

Unlike other occasions, this documentary is not meant for all fans to discover something beyond the sport or the competition: it tells us what we already know and reminisces what we all already know: Messi’s Argentina became the World Champions. If you don’t like football, you probably won’t find anything of interest, but if you do, it will be a delight to remember in six hours what this sport means in its most momentous competition.

As it has become customary lately on Netflix, this documentary has the virtue of having access to everything: players, their environment, and even their families. As a couple of Senegalese players would say: they are going to be on Netflix, and that’s like going worldwide, another level.

The great virtue of “Captains of the World” is, once again, having access to everything and getting where no one else does: beyond the press room, where the true game takes place, in the locker rooms, and in the minds of the 32 captains of the competing national teams.

Our opinion

A documentary that, without bringing anything relevant, will be a treat for fans. A delicious documentary for sport enthusiasts to savor with great footage and excellent interviews.
