Captivating the King is a series created by Jo Nam-gook and Kim Seon-deok. It stars Cho Jung-seok and Shin Se-kyung.

“Captivating the King” takes us into the story of the great Prince Jinhan who, by order of the Qing, lives exiled in the palace. There, he meets a mysterious woman who holds great secrets.

Day after day, and month after month, the Korean film industry continues to demonstrate its global prowess: a top-notch production that, in the form of a series, is a luxury with attention to detail, photography, setting, and decor.

About the Series

Netflix airs this series on a weekly basis, like some that arrive over the weekends from South Korea. However, “Captivating the King” has absolutely nothing to do with the latest titles, mostly smaller productions: this series stands out from the very beginning as a large-scale production with meticulous historical costume reproduction.

Despite its initial stages, “Captivating the King” is not a series of battles, envy, and betrayals like “Game of Thrones.” Its script takes us on a mix of a period romance and political intrigue where everything, absolutely everything, has been carefully crafted.

It knows how to play on these two fronts, but it is not an action series; it is a series of dialogues and characters, of palace intrigues and emotions within the battles for power during that time.

“Captivating the King” stands out for its phenomenal aesthetics, stunning photography, with exceptionally vivid and appealing colors. A delight to behold, beyond the story it tells.

Our Opinion

A series that stands out primarily for its historical recreation aspect.
