The Lady of Silence: The Mataviejitas Murders is a Mexican documentary directed by María José Cuevas.

The Lady of Silence: The Mataviejitas Murders” is a documentary that delves into the case of Juana Barraza, a Mexican woman who was convicted of murdering 42 elderly women in Mexico City between 1998 and 2005. The documentary provides an in-depth exploration of Barraza’s life, her motives behind the killings, and the investigation that ultimately led to her apprehension.

During the early 2000s, Mexico City faced a series of murders that posed a significant challenge to the local law enforcement. These crimes involved the strangulation of elderly women within the confines of their own homes, causing widespread public outrage and garnering unprecedented media attention. The Attorney General’s Office directed its full resources and efforts towards capturing the perpetrator, who was identified as a tall, physically strong individual disguising themselves as a nurse to gain the trust of their victims. Despite encountering numerous obstacles, including failed arrests and conflicting testimonies, law enforcement managed to apprehend a woman in broad daylight in January 2006, as she attempted to flee the scene of a crime. This woman was Juana Barraza, also known in the wrestling world as “La Dama del Silencio” and labeled by the media as “The Little Old Ladykiller”. This moniker has since become a part of Mexico’s dark history and its unique popular culture.
