David Zwirner Marks 30th Anniversary with Flagship Gallery Opening in Los Angeles

Los Angeles, May 1, 2024 – Renowned art gallery David Zwirner is set to commemorate its thirtieth anniversary through the unveiling of its new flagship gallery in Los Angeles, accompanied by a celebratory exhibition that sees the assembly of its entire artist roster. This significant moment in the gallery’s history introduces a new chapter with the opening slated for May 23, 2024.

The grand opening exhibition, titled “David Zwirner: 30 Years,” features an impressive collection of new paintings, sculptures, and installations, specially commissioned for the occasion, alongside recent and historical pieces. This fusion of old and new highlights the gallery’s enduring legacy and its forward-looking vision. The showcase includes works by long-standing gallery artists such as Luc Tuymans and Stan Douglas, as well as those who have recently joined, including Elizabeth Peyton, Michael Armitage, and Emma McIntyre.

Situated at 606 North Western Avenue in the Melrose Hill area, the brand-new gallery building—designed by the prestigious Selldorf Architects— spans three adjacent spaces at 612 and 616 North Western Avenue, which initially opened in May 2023. The three-story structure boasts over 15,000 square feet of exhibition space, an outdoor terrace offering views of the iconic Hollywood Sign, and a distinctive concrete staircase that links the first and second floors, echoing the design found at David Zwirner’s 20th Street gallery in New York City.

David Zwirner expresses his enthusiasm for this milestone, stating, “To mark the gallery’s 30th anniversary and to inaugurate the completion of our new Los Angeles building, we are excited to present a very special exhibition that celebrates the artists who have shaped the gallery’s program since its founding. Many of our artists will be in LA for this happy occasion, as we toast to thirty years of exhibitions, books, spaces, and projects, and look forward to all that is to come.”

Over the past three decades, David Zwirner has carved out a reputation for hosting innovative and pioneering exhibitions, nurturing the careers of some of today’s most influential artists, and maintaining representation of a wide-ranging, international group of artists. From its initial opening in SoHo in 1993, the gallery now boasts over eighty artists and estates in its roster, with twelve locations worldwide—all designed by Selldorf Architects.

Aside from its gallery program and exhibitions, David Zwirner continues to engage audiences through digital platforms such as David Zwirner Online, inaugurated in 2017 as the commercial art world’s first online viewing room, and the “Dialogues” podcast, which launched in 2018 and is now in its eighth season. Additionally, in 2021, the gallery expanded its reach with Utopia Editions, functioning as a publisher of original fine art prints.

David Zwirner Books rounds off the gallery’s diverse array of artistic endeavors, celebrating its 10th anniversary with a commitment to publishing high-quality art publications, from monographs and artist books to historical surveys.

The opening of the Los Angeles flagship and the 30th-anniversary exhibition not only reflects David Zwirner’s substantial growth and influence in the art world but also showcases its sustained dedication to promoting premier artistic talent and engaging with broader audiences through diverse mediums.
