Marc Chagall’s set of 42 lithographs, Daphnis et Chloé, led the Impressionist and Modern Art Day and Works on Paper Sale, selling for £819,000. In addition, further highlights by the artist were presented as part of Marc Chagall: Works Formerly from the Artist’s Estate:

  • Les amoureux aux cyprès à Saint-Paul sold for £138,600 (estimate: £50,000-70,000)
  • Repos sous les arbres achieved £81,900 against an estimate of £15,000-25,000
  • Autour du village realised £138,600 (estimate: £40,000-60,000)

As part of the cultural programme across London celebrating the re-opening of the National Portrait Gallery, portraiture was a focus throughout our sale season. The Impressionist and Modern Art Day and Works on Paper was highlighted by:

  • Edgar Degas’ Femme nue s’essuyant sold for £327,600
  • Auguste RodinEve, petit modèle, Version à la base carrée dite aussi aux pieds plats (£327,600)
  • Piet Mondrian’s Portret van Elisabeth Sophia Maria (Betsy) Cavalini more than doubled its low estimate of £60,000 to sell for £151,200
  • Alexej von Jawlensky’s Heilandsgesicht sold for £226,800

Sales continue with First Open: Post-War and Contemporary Art Online, which remains open for bidding until 5 July.

Selfhood: Explorations of Being and Becoming in 20th and 21st Century Art, a selling exhibition focusing on art as a vehicle for the expression of self-identity, part of the National Portrait Gallery’s Portrait Mode campaign, remains on view until 13 July. The cross-platform exhibition will also be available online until 31 August and includes works by Tracey Emin, Lucian Freud, Alice Neel, Suzanne Valadon and many more.
