‘About My Father’ (2023) Movie Review

About My Father
About My Father

About My Father is a comedy film starring Sebastian Maniscalco and Robert De Niro, directed by Laura Terruso.

The movie is a pleasant comedy that tries to be pure comedy but falls short in terms of humor and sentimentality.

Robert De Niro plays his role well, although it feels like he’s parodying himself once again.

Sebastian Maniscalco, known for his excellent Netflix stand-up comedy, brings some humor to the film with his Brooklyn-style parodies.

Storyline

The plot revolves around Sebastian, whose fiancée encourages him to bring her father, Salvo, an immigrant and a barber, to a weekend gathering with her wealthy and eccentric family. The weekend turns into a cultural clash, during which Sebastian and Salvo discover that the best thing about the family is everything related to family.

The Movie

The film is a parody of Italian-Americans, Americans… and everything that moves on the screen. However, it lacks a strong storyline and relies heavily on De Niro’s acting skills, which were remarkable in the past and still shine through at times.

Technically, the movie is decent, but it lacks interest and is shot with little enthusiasm, almost like a series of sketches that leave a bittersweet taste of comedy that doesn’t quite reach its full potential.

De Niro has played a similar role before , but this time he’s the more rural part of the equation. About My Father is entertaining but not convincing enough to leave a lasting impression.

Our Opinion

About My Father is a decent and enjoyable movie, but it lacks any particularly hilarious scenes that viewers will remember.
